If you’ve completed the PADI Divemaster Course, and are looking to switch careers or want to turn your hobby into a rewarding profession, you’re in the right place. This guide has everything you need to know about becoming a PADI Certified SCUBA Diver Instructor at UDC, from why you should train with UDC to what all you can expect along the way.

Let’s begin.

Why Choose Utila Dive Center for Your PADI Instructor Training?

The Best Dive School in the Caribbean for Instructor Certification

At Utila Dive Center, we’ve spent over 20 years setting the gold standard for SCUBA Instructor training, not just in the Caribbean, but worldwide. We’re proud to be a PADI 5-Star Career Development Center, but it’s how we run our programs that makes the real difference.

Here’s what sets us apart from other IDCs, even the ones right here on Utila:

Decades of experience: With years of dive experience under their belt, our Instructor Development team has helped shape careers in every corner of the dive industry. You’ll learn from people who’ve been there, done that, and genuinely want to see you succeed.

Trusted by PADI to set the benchmark: PADI chooses Utila Dive Center as a test site for new developments and updates to the IDC program. That means you’re learning at a center that sets the benchmark for instructor training. At UDC, we don’t just keep up, we help lead the way.

Career support that goes the extra mile: We’re in this with you for the long haul. From writing your first dive resume to landing your first job, we provide complete career guidance and mentorship. We also help you make real connections in the industry. Many of our past students now manage dive centers or work as Course Directors themselves. Isn’t that amazing?

Comprehensive Training Programs Designed for Success

At UDC, we take your training and professional development very seriously. That’s why our PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to help you thrive, not just pass the Instructor Examination (IE).

In this PADI Instructor Course, you’ll train using real-world scenarios, practice in confined settings and open water, and hone your rescue and leadership skills to build confidence– all with the help of our supportive mentors.

We take on a hands-on approach, which means you don’t just learn theory, you also get to know what it’s like to be an actual PADI certified SCUBA diver.

Exclusive Perks and Benefits for Students

When you choose UDC, you don’t just get world-class training, you also get:

  • Free fun diving for life– we mean it.
  • Free equipment– you just need to bring along your wetsuit and a dive computer.
  • Free equipment trials– experience Free Diving, Full Facemask, Sidemount, TEC Doubles, Diver Propulsion Vehicles and more.
  • Career guidance and job placement– you get access to the largest Global Placement Network in the Industry.

Requirements to Enroll in the UDC Instructor Development Course (IDC)

Before you can enroll in the Instructor Development Course at UDC, there are a few requirements you’ll need to meet. Don’t worry, if you’re missing anything, we can help you out.

Certification and Experience Prerequisites

  • You must be a certified SCUBA diver for at least 6 months.
  • You must hold a PADI Divemaster certification (or hold a leadership certification from another recognised diving organization.)
  • You need to have logged at least 60 dives to enroll in the IDC and 100 dives to appear for the Instructor Examination (IE).
  • You must have a recent (within the last 24 months) Emergency First Response (EFR) certification or another qualifying CPR and First Aid certification.
  • You need to have been certified as an Open Water diver (or equivalent) for 6 months before starting.

UDC offers this in case you need a refresher!

Health and Age Requirements

When it comes to the health and age requirements, you don’t need much. You just need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be in good physical health with a medical statement signed by a physician within the past 12 months, clearing you for diving activities.

The Instructor Development Course at UDC – What to Expect

Let’s talk about the best part– what you can expect when you enroll in the IDC.

Training to become a PADI Dive Instructor is an amazing experience and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. At Utila Dive Center, you’ll get the best, fun, and most supportive learning environment in Honduras.

Duration

Our Instructor Development Course takes around 14 days to complete, with two more days for the PADI Examinations. This includes both the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) and Assistant Instructor (AI) components. You’ll get plenty of time to train, review, and build your confidence as an instructor.

We still recommend arriving here a few days early to get some fun dives in, meet your batch mates, and get used to the island life.

Course Structure

  • Knowledge development

You’ll begin by taking part in classroom sessions covering the entire PADI system, standards and procedures, and teaching skills.

  • Confined water training

Next, you’ll learn how to conduct confined sessions and how to manage a group of students underwater.

  • Open water training

Once you master confined water training, you’ll learn how to organize and supervise your students in real open water conditions with Utila’s magical reefs as your backdrop.

  • Teaching presentations

You’ll give actual teaching presentations to improve your communication and instructional skills.

  • Workshops and skill circuits

Brush up on your rescue and leadership skills to demonstration-quality standards.
